About India Post GDS

The Department of Posts (India Post) is a Government of India organisation under the Ministry of Communications responsible for postal services across India. The Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) scheme engages personnel at village/post-office levels across the country to operate essential postal and financial services in rural and urban areas.

The 2026 Notification (No. 17-37/2025-GDS) outlines the online engagement process for GDS posts, including Branch Postmaster (BPM), Assistant BPM (ABPM) and Dak Sevak roles.


Detailed Job Responsibilities

GDS personnel fulfil crucial postal functions including:

Branch Postmaster (BPM)

  • Manage day-to-day postal operations, mail conveyance and delivery.

  • Oversee India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) services.

  • Conduct marketing and service promotion.

  • Ensure functional branch office operations. 

Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM)

  • Assist BPM in postal duties including mail delivery, transactions and customer services.

  • Support marketing and operational tasks.

Dak Sevak

  • Handle mail sorting and delivery in sub-offices and departmental offices.

  • Assist in customer transactions, postal and financial services. 

GDS engagements are not considered regular government employment but civil posts with Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA) and allowances per applicable rules. 


Eligibility Criteria

Criteria Details
Educational Qualification 10th Pass with passing marks in Mathematics & English from a recognized board
Local Language Studied local language at least up to 10th standard
Age Limit 18 – 40 years (Age relaxation as per Govt norms)
Computer Skill Basic computer knowledge recommended

Note: Reservation and age relaxation follow Government of India guidelines under categories such as SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwBD.


Selection Process

  • Online Registration: Submit your details on the official portal. 

  • Application Submission: Complete your profile, upload photo & signature. 

  • Registration Edit Window: Corrections allowed within scheduled dates if provided.

  • Shortlisting: Determined based on eligibility, marks and local language proficiency.

  • Document Verification: Conducted after provisional selection.


Salary & Benefits

GDS employees receive Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA) and allowances as per rules. Typical monthly TRCA rates include:

  • Branch Postmaster (BPM): ₹12,000 – ₹29,380

  • ABPM / Dak Sevak: ₹10,000 – ₹24,470
    Annual increment, Dearness Allowance and service benefits apply under the Department of Posts rules.
